On September 29th of 2000 I performed an action, which consisted in mugging a person with middle class appearance. It was done the following way: armed with a gun I went out to a street in Zone 10, I stopped a man of about 44 or 45 years of age, thinning brunette hair, a little overweight, and pointing at his face I said: this is not a robbery, its a loan, and I will give it back to you as visual language for your children. This person gave me Q847.35. This installation is being paid for by the man that was mugged, through which I have financed the invitations, the overall setup, and a part of the cocktail drinks for this show.

“¡Ése fue, ése fue!” gritó alguien.
Juan volteó a ver atrás suyo y descubrió a un mimo que se acercaba con una mueca de urgencia. Hilillos de sudor bajaban por su frente y le daban un aspecto siniestro al rostro blanco. Que poco profesional, pensó Juan. Vendedores ambulantes, oficinistas, ayudantes de bus, tres payasos y un perro que cojeaba de la pata trasera seguían al mimo a poca distancia. El perro parecía feliz.
“¡El de camisa azul, el de camisa azul!” gritó el mimo.
Juan vio al tipo a una cuadra, maniobrando atolondrado entre los puestos de venta. Entendió de inmediato. Se puso la chaqueta y empezó a correr tras él. Discos y zapatos y muñecas chinas desbordaban sobre la sexta avenida. Vendedores salían de quioscos abultados ante el griterío del mimo. Algunos se unían a la persecución. La mayoría se quedaba atrás, abrazándose a sí mismos mientras balanceaban sus cuerpos sobre el filo de la banqueta.
“¡A la derecha! ¡A la derecha!”
Juan sintió el bulto del revólver contra el vientre. Pensó en sacarlo pero el otro se había alejado y hubiera sido difícil alcanzarlo con pistola en mano. Volteó a ver y unos cuantos vendedores aún lo seguían de cerca. El mimo jadeaba a la distancia.
“¡Ahí arribita! ¡Ahí arribita!”
Una tortillera meneó la cabeza de arriba a abajo, señalando con los labios apretados hacia una callejuela. La gran cesta amarilla descansaba entre sus brazos. Juan siguió corriendo lo más rápido que pudo.
“¡Apúrele, apúrele que se va! ¡Apúrele que…”
Le dolían las piernas y algo retumbaba en algún lugar indeterminado de su tórax. Brincó sobre la banqueta. Dos niños de uniforme escolar se hicieron a un lado para dejarlo pasar. Vio una camisa azul que cruzaba a la izquierda y saltó sobre un tragante mientras viraba. Cayó mal pero continuó recto, cojeando, con sus dedos envolviendo el mango duro del revólver.
“¡Ahí está! ¡Ahí está!”
Un bus enorme pasó a toda velocidad. Dejó una espesa nube gris y el olor de embrague chamuscado lo asfixió. Iba a parar pero escuchó que alguien más lo alentaba.
“¡Por ai va, por ai va! ¡El de chaqueta, el de chaqueta!” gritaban a sus espaldas.
Juan continuó con ojos llorosos y el arma empuñada, pero cuando llegó a la próxima esquina sólo tuvo un segundo para entender que lo mejor era seguir corriendo, quizás era mejor ya no ver hacia atrás.

Atelier 356 just opened its doors this past February and it happens to be the new home of La Fototeca. It’s located in a building rooftop in zone 4 of Guatemala City, and it offers an unbeatable panoramic view of the City, conference room, different work areas, and a whole lot of light. Needless to say, it’s very fresh.

Son of a Mariachi, Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa is a Guatemalan artist living in Vancouver, BC. His work is based around the ephemeral, manifested primarily through performances and installations.

According to Naufus:

“In this performance-installation, I slept with a banana bunch for two weeks. Letting it slowly turn yellow through contact with my body’s warmth. Para Ti El Banano Madura Al Peso De Tu Dulce Amor questioned if the Central American psyche has been affected by its interminable economic dependence on the exportation of bananas.”
